So..recently I was asked "are all tribal dancers goth and if not, why is there such a heavy gothic influence in our attire?"
Good darn question. I know not ALL tribal dancers are goths, however most are *alternative*. I think it sorta fit hand in hand since alot of the tribal dancers didnt *fit* into the cabaret sequins scene lol. As body piercing and tattoos became more acceptable in the US, former classic styles of bellydance didnt want any part of them! Any comments on this??? And how can you be tribal and NOT look goth...just by adding color lol?!

Re: Goth& Dance
Mon, April 5, 2004 - 7:24 AMGoth was definitely not the first thing I thought of when I saw tribal bellydance - I had seen glimmers of it here and there at large liberal gatherings and renfaires, and was even working on my own tassel belt (before I even knew what it was!) based on something I had seen a renfaire "gypsy" wear back in 1998. I first saw the words "gothic bellydance" togethere here on the web, but I was immediately like, "oh, of course". With many dancers tattooed, pierced, in heavy black eyeliner, heavy black skirts, black cholis, dreadlocks of black or multicolors, the two just lend themselves to each other, don't you think?
I have seen the goth scene go from backwards-looking (Edwardian clothes, vampirism, death, Poe) to future-looking (cyber, cyber punk, fake hair, piercings, plastic clothes, hacker culture). Change is good, although I threaten to fall into the ElderGoth category very soon.... But I have to admit, the bright primaries of tribal do appeal to the PerkyGoth in me! -

Re: Goth& Dance
Mon, April 5, 2004 - 9:50 AMIts seeming to be that way with alot of people who were interested in bellydance, but didnt dig the costuming of cabaret. Restaurant owners dont like tattoos and piercings..and since most Cabaret dancers work the restaurant scene, alot of people were automatically excluded do to body art, or size of their bodies before ever showing how beautifully they could dance!
It didnt really look *that* goth when I started tribal either, but within the past 2 years it seems to have ignited the gothic scene into joining in alot of bellydance troupes..thus influencing them. My gothy friends said it was because the first time they saw tribal the troupe had on the classic black choli/black skirt..facial drawings, and tattoos..so hell yea, why not?!
I think the blending has been yet another wonderful addition to tribal. I reallllllly dig dancing to SOME of the goth music (London After Midnight I am super hung up on now lol).

Re: Goth& Dance
Tue, April 6, 2004 - 1:25 PMI agree!
I've been interested in belly dance since I was a wee little girlie, but as I grew older (and wierder), I realized I don't like bright colors, sequins, or plastic bead fringe. Geh! I sort of put my interest in dance on the back burner and forgot about it since I didn't think I'd ever stand a chance. I'm on the larger side and I've a passion for body art and body modification. A traditional/cabaret teacher's nightmare, eh?
So, I signed up for a beginner's belly dance class through local community ed, thinking it'd be good exercise. I started researching dance on the net before the class started...and I discovered Tribal! I discovered FCBD, Ultra Gypsy, and TONS of others and thought "hey...it's not all cheezy smiles and sequins any more. I can do that." My life has not been the same ever since. I feel at peace with my "gothness" (hahaha) when dancing...like it's more accepted. Or maybe they're just distracted by the coin bra and cleavage enough to not notice everything else. :oP
hmmm...come to think of it...tribal has actually made me wear more color...hehehe
